Pinewood Derby Racing Day

The Pinewood Derby Competition brings Cub Scouts and parents together through the exciting tradition of building and racing wooden cars. This event offers a fun, friendly, and positive form of competition the whole family can enjoy!

This is an Adventure Pass event, and Scouts BSA are also invited to join in the racing excitement.

1500 Country Club Rd, Lake Charles, LA

Check-in: Begins at 10:00 AM
Lunch: Served at 11:45 AM
Racing: Starts promptly at 1:00 PM — don’t be late!

About the Pinewood Derby

A Pinewood Derby car is a simple machine that demonstrates key principles of physics, including:

• Gravity
• Potential and kinetic energy
• Friction
• Aerodynamic drag

Scouts use creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on skills to design and build a car that gains speed down an incline and maintains momentum on a flat track.

Cars should be built by the Cub Scout, with appropriate adult guidance. Any technical assistance should be clearly explained so the Scout can apply that knowledge to future projects. Remember—the most important rule is for the Scout to have FUN building and racing their car!

Divisions & Awards

Competition divisions include:

• Cub Scouts
• Scouts BSA
• Adults
• Outlaw

Awards will be presented for:

• 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each division
• Scout’s Choice Award
• Cubmaster’s Choice Award

Rules & Specifications

Many great design ideas can be found online; however, all cars must comply with the Calcasieu Derby rules and specifications. Please refer to the attached document for complete construction requirements and competition guidelines.

Food & Fun

Our friends at Lake Charles Toyota will be on site providing lunch during the event!
